• New Mexico’s best fillies and mares run in Saturday’s $85,000 Peppers Pride Handicap
• $85,000 NMHBA Quarter Horse Stakes staged on Sunday

The finest New Mexico-bred fillies and mares converge on Saturday in the $85,000 Peppers Pride Handicap(9th race) at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. The featured race is named after the legendary New Mexico-bred stakes mare Peppers Pride who went undefeated winning 19 races in her stellar career. Trained by Joel Marr and by Desert God, Peppers Pride retired in 2008.

In 2015, Marr has another budding star in Zasha. The route loving daughter of Desert God should be tough to handle in the one mile distaff feature. With major stakes route wins under her belt at Sunland Park and Zia Park, Zasha should receive plenty of betting attention and is listed as the 4-1 second choice with Ken Tohill in the irons. Zasha rolled to a powerful 4 and ½ length local win against allowance company on Dec. 28. She looked terrific beating Peppers Pride stakes rivals Ilikewinnin and Don’t Ask Ghost. Zasha has earned nearly $200,000 from 4 career wins.

Renewed Vows, winner of the $85,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap at Sunland Park last December, is the major threat and the 3-1 morning line favorite. She has won two straight stakes races and is in peak form for trainer Bart Hone. Her glittering record stands at 5 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third from 11 starts with a bankroll over $213,000. She and jockey Isaias Enriquez demand respect. The one mile distance could be the only challenge.

The talented closing sprinter Little Vidalia, Don’t Ask Ghost, Way to Go Gerda and Ilikewinnin are also worthy contenders.

Sunday’s main event is the $85,000 NMHBA Quarter Horse Stakes (5th race) at 400 yards. The classy Quemados Version seeks redemption in the 23rd running of the New Mexico-bred stakes. The powerful Paul Jones trainee scored a smart prep win here on Jan. 17. Quemados Version was heavily favored in last year’s New Mexican Spring Futurity but finished fifth after a slow starts. Tanner Thedford riders the winner of 4 races.

Hit With Force, Dungarees Version, Jess Bordeaux and Seeyalateralligator are all stakes placed runners.

Post time on Saturday, Sunday and Monday is 12:15 p.m.
