Rylees Boy surges late to win $50,000 KOFX-Radio Handicap

Ballistic Heat wins $33,600 SPRC Claiming Series – Phase #1

Four Super High 5 winners cash for $7,877.60 each

Rylees Boy exploded in deep stretch to win the $50,000 KOFX-Radio Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday. Under jockey Joe Ruiz, the 2009 runner-up in the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park showed his class in the 350 yard feature. The rapidly improving Arizona-bred son of Heza Motor Scooter kicked into high gear in the final 100 yards to sweep by his opponents. The five-year-old gelding edged past Shy Ann Jess the final jumps to win by a neck. The winner sped through the race in good 17.23 seconds, good for a 92 speed index.

Rylees Boy collected his 11th career win from 24 starts. The 6-5 favorite earned $30,000 for owner-trainer Gerardo Pena-Ochoa. His career earnings swelled past the $211,00 mark. At one point last year, the Arizona-based speedball won five straight races. He shipped to California last October and finished a close third behind Fighter On Fire in the Bank of America Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos.

Shy Ann Jess ran a gallant race under jockey G.R. Carter. Despite breaking inward at the start, the muscular stallion by Mr Jess Perry turned on the jets early and led mid-way home. The five-year-old speedster just missed in the final stanza. The 5-2 second choice had won his last three races.

Brenda Beautiful, winner of the 2008 Hobbs America Futurity, wound up a close third beaten one-half length under Kenny Muntz. Lake View Dreams was in the mix and finished fourth.

Ballistic Heat roared from far off the pace to take a dramatic victory in the $33,600 Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino Claiming Series – Phase #1 at five and one-half furlongs. Under a clever ride from Luis Contreras, the 2-1 second favorite trained by Henry Dominguez closed from over 12 lengths off the pace and produced a dynamic stretch winning victory. In the final furlong, Contreras guided his charge in between runners, and the duo won by a head over 21-1 outsider Shakin In Dancin.

The seven-year-old son of Unusual Heat clocked the distance in a fast 1:03.95 seconds. Ballistic Heat claimed his 8th career win from 45 starts. He earned $20,160 for winning owner-trainer Henry Dominguez. Ballistic Heat was subsequently claimed for $10,000 by new trainer Betty Coatney.

Shakin N Dancin had to settle for a hard fought second place effort under jockey Catalino Martinez. Fast Devon ended up a good third after pressing the pace. The 6-5 favorite Itshim was burned up in the speed duel and finished out of the money.

Saturday’s 50-cent Super High 5 wager was hit. There were 4 winning tickets with the (3-4-7-10-8) combination in the 11th race. Each 50-cent ticket paid $7,877.60. The Super High 5 wager challenges the bettor to select the top five finishers in order in the 11th race. Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:25 p.m.
