Queen Greeley posts upset win in $50,000 El Paso Times Stakes

Trained by red hot Todd Fincher, Queen Greeley launched a wide run on the far turn to take an upset win in the $50,000 El Paso Times Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

Patiently ridden by Isaias Enriquez, the 10-1 long shot found her best strides in the final quarter mile of the six and one-half furlong distaff feature. The three-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Mr Greeley produced a bold rally from sixth place while racing past the half mile maker. With long sweeping strides, Queen Greeley engulfed the front running favorite Tornado Betty in upper stretch and drew clear of a solid group. Enriquez collected his second straight stakes win of the weekend. He piloted Chuchuluco to victory in the $125,000 Pepsi Cola Stakes on Saturday

Queen Greeley swept to an impressive two and three-quarter length victory and was timed in 1:18.72. The bay filly earned a $30,000 paycheck for owners Barbara and Chris Coleman of Farmington, New Mexico. She has two wins from three starts. Loyal backers of Queen Greeley received $23.80 on a $2 win ticket.

The big story of the weekend of course was Todd Fincher. Queen Greeley’s victory gave the trainer his fourth stakes win of the month. Sunland’s leading Thoroughbred trainer in terms of money won collected victories in yesterday’s Pepsi Cola Stakes along with wins in the Albert Dominguez Memorial and La Senora earlier this month. His horses have won over $450,000 this season.

Pyrite On My Mind, a 9-1 outsider, closed eagerly in the final furlong to gain second place. She finished two and one-half lengths in front of the 3-2 betting choice Tornado Betty. The runner-up earned $10,750 for owner Gary Butcher. Tornado Betty ran a strong race and led by a length in upper stretch. The stakes winner from Turf Paradise seemed to run out of steam once past by Queen Greeley.

Certain Pride finished a distant fourth with jockey Luis Contreras. The fourth place finisher completed a $1 superfecta worth $1,227.70.

Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:25 p.m.
