Black Hills mows down rivals in $50,000 Winsham Lad Handicap
Black Hills mowed down his rivals with a devastating kick and rolled to a dominant 3-length win in the $50,000 Winsham Lad Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino at Saturday. Under jockey Catalino Martinez, Black Hills handed Song of Navarone his first defeat over Sunland Park soil since 2006.
Let go at 4-1 odds, Black Hills unleashed a wicked move on the far turn and inhaled the front running Happy Humor with over a quarter mile to go in the one mile feature. The rangy stretch runner found his himself on the lead at the top of the stretch, and he was full of run. The winner covered the distance in a fast 1:36.22. His final quarter mile time was a sharp 24.20 seconds. Loyal supports of Black Hills received $10.80 on a $2 win ticket.
Black Hills earned a $30,000 paycheck, increasing his lifetime bankroll past $347,000 from 8 career wins. He is owned by A and R Stables LLC and the Class Racing Stable of San Dimas, California. Defending champion and 2007 WinStar Derby winner Song of Navarone failed to fire as the 9-5 second favorite. The six-year-old Sultry Song stallion raced a distant second behind Happy Humor in the early stages but could not find his top gear. The winner of over $745,000 finished a well beaten fourth, over 5 lengths behind the winner. Last season, Song of Navarone also won the Sunland Park and Curribot Handicaps.
Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:25 p.m. The $37,000 Rio Grande at 870 yards is the live feature. Multiple stakes winning sprinter Loves Bonus rates an early 9-5 favorite for the 4th race.
