Mr Regard wins $338,638 Shue Fly

Some Ghost aims for fifth straight $100,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap on Sunday

Mr Regard steamrolled to an impressive three-quarter length victory in the 38th running of the $338,638 Shue Fly at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday. Let go at nearly 7-1 in the betting, the sharp grey son of Chicks Regard poured on the pressure early and gained an unassailable lead mid-way through the 400 yard dash.

Under jockey Tony Guymon, the New Mexico-bred dynamo responded brilliantly for a career best effort. Mr Regard remained clear of his rivals and won with authority. The confident winner drove clear under mild urging and was clocked in 19.319 seconds. Since finishing second in the New Mexican Spring Futurity last season, Mr Regard has come back with two blazing wins for trainer Juan M. Gonzalez.

Mr Regard earned a $159,160 paycheck for the KH Logax, Inc. He has three wins from four starts with earnings topping the $224,000 mark. Mr. Regard paid $15.20 on $2 win ticket.

19-1 long shot The Gap was all out to gain second under replacement jockey Kenny Muntz. The runner-up closed well in the final stages. He earned $60,955 for the

SM Cattle Export Company.

Niftys Royal Flush, the top qualifier, finished nearly one length behind the winner in third place. He earned $37,250 for Abelardo Gallegos. Do You Copy wound up a neck back in fourth place.

Proven stakes winner Sixy Chamisa failed to deliver her customary punch. The 9-5 favorite chased Mr Regard throughout and finished a weary fifth place under jockey Salvador Martinez. Last spring, the daughter of Sixes Royal won the New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity at SunRay Park.

On Sunday, the nine-year-old stakes star Some Ghost goes for his fifth consecutive win in the $100,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (10th race) at one and one-sixteenth miles. The winner of nearly $850,000 gets Ken Tohill in the saddle. His rivals include two-time Johnie L. Jamison Stakes winner Cattleman Prospect, Fullofenergy and Enchanted Outlaw. Post time on Sunday is 12:25 p.m.
