Huntin The Trash wins $125,000 Red Hedeman Mile
Huntin The Trash won the eighth running of the $125,000 Red Hedeman Mile on Saturday at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Under an expert ride from jockey Mark Villa, Huntin The Trash generated an emphatic move around the turn for home and swept to the front. The two-year-old colt by Halory Hunter drove past a determined effort from arch rival Rig’s Runner and won by one-length.
Huntin The Trash earned a measure of revenge by turning the tables on Rig’s Runner. The latter had defeated Huntin The Trash in the recent Eddy County Handicap at Zia Park. On Saturday, the winner exploded from 10th place with a half mile to go in the New Mexico-bred test. Villa engineered the winning move with a four wide run. Huntin The Trash responded eagerly with a big effort. The winning time was 1:41.57,
Trained by Carlos Sedillo, Huntin The Trash earned his third career stakes win. The 8-5 second favorite earned a $75,000 pay day for the Three H Racing LLC. The chestnut colt caps off a terrific freshman campaign earning over $157,000 from 4 wins.
Breaking from the #10 post position, Rig’s Runner was valiant in defeat. He tried to overcome a wide run into the first turn and gained a narrow advantage into the stretch run. With Casey Lambert at the controls, The Eddy County Stakes winner ran his heart out but could not stall off the winner. He finished second, one half length in front of Train Rider Blues. The 3-2 post time favorite earned $26,875 for owner Derrell Riggan.
Brother Louie finished fourth with jockey Alejandro Medellin.
