Mr Frenchman closes fast to win $125,000 Challenger Six Handicap

Under jockey Ricardo Jaime, Mr Frenchman closed stoutly to win the $125,000 Challenger Six Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday.

Mr Frenchman surged in deep stretch under steady urging from Jaime to gain control of the 870 yard feature for New Mexico-breds. The 7-1 long shot trained by Johnie Nall swept on past Lost Southerner and raced to a three-quarter length victory. Despite racing 3-wide, the powerful closer found his best strides in the final stanza and overwhelmed the front runner. The winner sped though the distance in 45.861 seconds.

Mr Frenchman is a multiple stakes winning New Mexico-bred son of Jacksboro carries 12 career wins. He has earned nearly $500,000 in his highly productive career. The brown gelding is owned by the Simply The Best Thoroughbreds of Temecula, California. He returned $17.20 on a $2 win ticket.

Recall Dreams recovered bravely after a rough start. Jockey Martin Bourdieu was forced to check sharply into the turn for home. Recall Dreams closed mightily from sixth place and finished second. The 6-1 shot was forced into come from behind tactics.

Lost Southerner and jockey Casey Lambert opened up a 2-length advantage in upper stretch but failed to maintain momentum. The pair finished third, a length behind the winner. High On Cat finished in tight quarters along the rail and was fourth.

Key’s Band, the 3-5 favorite, found all kinds of traffic problems in the stretch run. The multiple stakes winning Thoroughbred could never find his best strides. He and jockey Alejandro Medellin finished a well beaten sixth.

Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:25 p.m. The $125,000 Lou Wooten Handicap and the $125,000 Enchantress Stakes are the live feature races. Sunland Park Racing Calendars will be given away while supplies last.
