West Texas Futurity, Sunland Park Handicap

Fast Prize Zoom wins West Texas Futurity; One Lucky Buck wins Sunland Park Handicap

Wesley T. Giles loves the West Texas Futurity. For the second straight year, a Giles-trained horse won the Grade 1, 300-yard event, this time with Fast Prize Zoom. Last year, Giles’ Wild Six won the event.
On Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, it was all about Fast Prize Zoom. The 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by Shazoom ran a world-record and track record time of 14.67 to improve to 2-for-2 in her young career. Sunday’s edition of the West Texas Futurity was the 50th running of the popular event.
Fast Prize Zoom was a bit unsettled in the gate, but once the race began she raced out of the No. 9 spot and had no trouble in besting her previous time of 14.87 in the trials back on April 4 at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. The 14.87 was the previous track record.
Fast Prize Zoom returned $4.40 on a $2 win ticket for her loyal backers and also $4.20 to place and $2.40 to show. Jockey G.R. Carter, who is one of the nation’s top jockeys, won his first-ever West Texas Futurity.
Giles also saddled the second-place horse, the No. 6 Feature Ten, while the No. 1 horse, Jodys Money Pop was third for trainer Blane Wood.
“She’s a wonderful animal,” said owner William E. Smith of Fast Prize Zoom.
Smith owns Fast Prize Zoom along with Weetona Stanley.
Fast Prize Zoom earned $141,450 for the owners. The race was worth $300,958.
“I’m real fortunate to have this horse,” Giles said. “She was ready to run when I got her. I wanted to win this race, I’m glad we got 1-2.”
Fast Prize Zoom earned a 111 speed index in the race in winning by a half-length. She had a clear path once she settled down and had no trouble in boosting her earnings to $147,450.
In the $45,000 Invitational N.M. QH Fillies Handicap at 300 yards, Tunes picked up a nice win by a neck for her fifth win in nine starts. Tunes $28.40 win and earned a 102 speed index for trainer and owner Raymond M. Carlisle. Mark Villa was the winning jockey.
In the 1 and 1/8th mile, $100,000 Sunland Park Handicap, One Lucky Buck won his fourth race in nine starts with a solid run throughout. One Lucky Buck was in or near the lead for much of the race and held off a game Rollicking Caller for the half-length win in a solid time of 1:48.94.
Broke Sharply finished third. The 6-5 favorite, Red Rock Creek, was far behind from the start and finished fourth.
The Florida-bred One Lucky Buck was ridden by Ken Tohill, is trained by Chris Hartman and owned by Adam and Paul Lewis of Moapa, Nev. Tohill also won the Sunland Park Handicap in 2006 aboard Mr. Trieste. Tohill won three races on Sunday afternoon.
“There were a lot of hopes for this horse when he started out,” Hartman said. “He’s run three straight good races (all wins) and he’s coming around really nice.”
Added Tohill: “I saw Chris Hartman one day during training and he said he thought he had a runner in this horse. He’s so much fun to be aboard.”
One Lucky Buck earned $60,000 for his owners and has now earned $117,085. He returned $6.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $3.60 to show.
Racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:55. Tuesday’s 13-race card is the final one of the meet.
